In previous posts I have highlighted the impact that polysyllabic word production can have on a child’s articulation, language, and phonological awareness skills and made some polysyllabic cards. After some searching on the Internet, I have found that there are minimal assessment tools or screeners for polysyllabic words and the articulation assessments out there have limited polysyllabic words or analysis.
I have made a really simple, colorful polysyllabic word screener that should take up only 2 minutes – or less of your assessment time! There are only three pages in this PowerPoint slide, and each page has six pictures set in a stimulating background scene containing 2, 3 and 4 syllable words. While this is in no means a stand alone assessment by itself, it could at least give you extra information about a child’s speech skills. The words include:
2 Syllable Words – apple, orange, carrot, lettuce, lemon, pumpkin,
3 Syllable Words - kangaroo, elephant, butterfly, gorilla, octopus, pelican
4 Syllable Words – helicopter, television, harmonica, binoculars, watermelon, caterpillar
