Paragraph Comprehension Worksheet *Freebie*

A lot of children that I see have difficulties comprehending and answering information about what they have just heard or read. I have made a handy therapy or homework sheet that will help your child:

*Answer ‘wh’ questions  *Identify main idea  *Provide details * Comprehend information

Free Download from my TPT store

For SLPs: Be curriculum focused and borrow some of the curriculum-based books from the classroom teacher to use. I also love using online kid-friendly newspaper and magazine articles. Supports CCSS for RL.K.1, RL.1.1, RL.2.1, RL.3.1 and RI.K.1, RI.1.1, RI.2.1, RI.3.1  for being able to answer questions in a text.

For teachers & parents: Use this sheet for school related books to see how much your child is understanding.

Younger children applications

For my pre-school to second graders I would use this in one of two ways, depending on their level of comprehension.  Using a book or other curriculum-focussed materials I would read one sentence at a time aloud to them and ask them one question at a time.

Eg. Who went the beach? Or Where did the family go?

If this is too hard, then I will tell them beforehand what detail to listen for.

Eg. I want you to listen to the next sentence and tell me where the family is going.

Older children applications

From third grade onward I would use the same strategies of asking the question before/after, but read aloud at least two sentences to a paragraph. I would also expect them to be able answer more than one question at a time.

Remember: A lot of children start state or district-wide testing at the third grade level and have to be able to pull meaning and find information from increasingly longer pieces of information.
